The quick answer: Permanent makeup aftercare comes down to keeping the area clean, applying a pea-sized amount of After Inked, and putting nothing else on it for the first 7 days. Avoid sun and tanning for 2 weeks, skip sweaty workouts for 2 weeks, and don’t pick at any flaking or peeling. Follow that, and your results will heal exactly the way they’re supposed to.
I tell every client the same thing before they leave my studio: the appointment is only half the process. What you do over the next couple of weeks matters just as much as the actual application.
Healing is different for everyone. Some skin holds pigment beautifully with almost no effort. Other skin needs a little more patience. Your skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, and how closely you follow aftercare all play a role in how your final results turn out.
Here’s what I want you to know going in: your brows are going to look darker and a little uneven at first. That’s normal, not a mistake. Over the following weeks, they’ll shed and lighten anywhere from 25% to 60%. It can feel alarming if you’re not expecting it, but it’s just part of how the pigment settles into your skin.
For the first few hours after your appointment, gently dab the area with a dry cotton pad or tissue every 30 minutes. You’re soaking up lymphatic fluid, not wiping or rubbing. This step matters more than people expect, since letting that fluid sit and harden can affect how evenly your pigment heals.
This is the window I ask clients to be the most careful about. Don’t put anything on the area besides your aftercare product for a full 7 days: no makeup, no other skincare, nothing extra “just in case.”
Here’s my actual routine:
A few things to avoid completely during this window:
This is the part I remind clients of the most: the color you see in the first couple of weeks isn’t your final color. It’ll continue shifting as your skin heals, and it can look lighter, patchier, or just different than you expected. That’s exactly what your perfecting session 8 weeks later is for. We’ll look at everything together and make any small adjustments needed once your skin has fully settled.
Lips heal on their own timeline. They’ll be dark and bold at first, then flake and peel within the first 3 days. During that stage, they’ll feel dry and chapped, which is completely normal.
After that first layer sheds, the color often looks very light or uneven. We call this ghosting, and it can take up to 8 weeks for your true color to fully bloom back in. I know that stretch can feel discouraging, but give it time before judging the final result.
A few lip-specific tips:
Brows and eyeliner follow the same general timeline as everything else: clean, moisturize, avoid, don’t pick. On top of the general rules above, hold off on brow or lash tinting, or any other facial treatments, for a full 10 days after your appointment.
Once you’re past the initial healing window, a few habits will help your results last:
If you’re curious about the bigger picture, like how long your results will really last and when you’ll actually need that touch-up, I get into that in how long permanent makeup actually lasts.
Some redness, mild swelling, itching, and flaking in the first couple of weeks is expected. What’s not normal is redness or pain that keeps getting worse instead of better, unusual discharge, or a fever.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, true infection symptoms tend to intensify over time rather than gradually improve, which is the opposite of typical healing. If anything about your healing feels off to you, don’t just wait it out. Reach out to me directly, or see a doctor.
The most critical window is the first 7 days, when I ask clients to put nothing but After Inked on the area. Full healing and true color can take up to 8 weeks, which is why your perfecting session is scheduled then.
This is completely normal. Brows typically shed and lighten 25% to 60% over the following weeks as your skin heals. What you see on day one isn’t your final result.
This is called ghosting. It can take up to 4 weeks for your true lip color to fully bloom back in after the initial peeling stage. It’s part of the process, not a sign anything went wrong.
Avoid makeup directly on the treated area for the first 7 days. Once you’re past initial healing, a damp Q-tip after applying makeup helps keep your pigment looking clean and visible.
Wait at least 10 days before any brow tinting, lash tinting, or other facial treatments near your permanent makeup.
