Before, after, and healed results of permanent makeup brows by Foundations Artistry in Ammon, Idaho, showing the full healing process from initial appointment to final result.

Permanent makeup looks darker right after your appointment and lightens significantly as it heals over 8 weeks. Everyone heals differently based on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare. Results last 1 to 2 years on average before a touch-up is needed. Mature skin responds beautifully when the right technique is used. Following your aftercare instructions, wearing SPF, and avoiding exfoliants near the treated area are the biggest things you can do to protect your results.

If you have ever gotten permanent makeup and wondered why it looks completely different two weeks later, you are not imagining things. The healing and aging process for permanent makeup is one of the most misunderstood parts of the whole experience, and it is something clients ask about constantly.

I do one thing and one thing only: permanent makeup. Not lashes, tattoos, or facials. Just permanent makeup, every single day. That kind of singular focus is genuinely rare to find, and it means I have built a level of insight around how permanent makeup heals and ages across every skin type, age group, and lifestyle that most artists simply do not have. Here is what I have learned.

What Actually Happens During The Healing Process

Right after your appointment, your permanent makeup will look bold, saturated, and darker than the final result. This is completely normal, and it is one of the biggest surprises for first-time clients. I always tell people: do not judge your brows until day 56.

Here is what your skin is going through, and honestly, what most of my clients are feeling along the way:

  • Day 1: You love them. They look amazing, and you are thrilled. For the first four hours, you will clean the treated area every hour with your aftercare pad to remove excess lymph and speed up healing. Before bed, gently wash with warm water and a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and apply a rice-sized dab of aftercare cream.
  • Days 2 to 4: The color looks really dark, and the brows look bigger than you expected. This is normal. Keep gently washing morning and night and applying your aftercare cream.
  • Days 5 to 7: The brows start scabbing and flaking. This is the part that worries people the most. Do not pick or scratch. Keep washing gently and applying your aftercare cream morning and night.
  • Days 8 to 10: The brows look extremely light, maybe even gone. They are not gone. The pigment is still there, settling under the skin. Keep your routine going.
  • Days 11 to 14: The color starts coming back. It will still look a little patchy and uneven. You can resume washing and product as normal at this point.
  • Day 56 (after your perfecting session): You love them again. This is the result

I always tell my clients not to panic during the peeling phase and not to judge their results until they have had their perfecting session and given the full eight weeks to pass. What you see at day 5 is not what you will have at day 56.

Why Everyone Heals Differently

I see this play out every single day in my studio. Two clients can come in with similar skin tones, get the same service, and walk out with noticeably different healed results. Several factors drive this:

  • Skin Type: Oily skin tends to break down pigment faster and can cause strokes to blur slightly over time. Dry or normal skin typically holds pigment longer and with more crispness.
  • Skincare Routine: Using retinol, acids, or anything that lightens, brightens, or tightens near the treated area will fade your permanent makeup more quickly.
  • Sun Exposure: UV rays are one of the biggest culprits in premature fading. SPF is your best friend if you want your results to last.
  • Age and Skin Texture: Mature skin heals beautifully, but it behaves differently than younger skin. Pigment may spread slightly more in thinner skin, which is why technique matters so much.
  • Aftercare Compliance: How you care for the area in the first two weeks has a massive impact on. Your final result. This is not optional. It is part of the process.

When permanent makeup is all you do, you stop guessing and start recognizing patterns. I have seen how the same technique plays out across hundreds of different clients, and that kind of repetition teaches you things you simply cannot learn any other way.

How Permanent Makeup Ages Over Time

Here is something I want to be upfront about: permanent makeup is permanent. The pigment goes into the skin, and it stays there. What changes over time is the vibrancy. Most people start to notice their brows losing warmth and fading around the one to two-year mark, which is completely normal and exactly why touchups exist.

I see this play out constantly in my studio. The pigment does not disappear, but it does soften. Colors can shift slightly, strokes can lose their crispness, and the overall look starts to feel less fresh than it did right after your appointment. That is not a flaw in the work. It is just how skin and pigment interact over time, and it is something I account for in how I build your brows from the start.

Here is what the aging process generally looks like:

  • Year 1: Your results look fresh and vibrant. Most clients are thrilled at this stage.
  • Years 1 to 2: This is when most people start noticing the pigment losing warmth and beginning to fade. A touch-up at this point refreshes the color, sharpens the shape, and brings everything back to life.
  • Beyond Year 2: Without a touchup, the fading continues. The pigment is still there, but the look becomes less defined. Regular touchups are what keep your results looking intentional rather than worn out.

Touchups are not a sign that something went wrong. They are part of having permanent makeup, the same way a haircut needs a trim or a manicure needs a fill. Staying on top of them is what keeps your brows looking their best year after year.

What Mature Skin Has Taught Me

Mature skin is honestly one of my favorite skin types to work with, and it is where the depth of doing only permanent makeup really shows up.

Clients with mature skin often come in wondering whether permanent makeup will look natural on them. The answer is yes, absolutely, but the approach has to be right. Thinner skin requires a lighter hand. Softer pigment choices tend to look more harmonious with mature complexions. And brow placement especially has to account for how the face has changed over time, because what worked at 30 does not always serve someone at 55.

What I have seen over years of doing only this work is that permanent makeup can genuinely restore confidence for mature clients. Sparse brows, faded lips, invisible lash lines. These are things that PMU addresses beautifully when the technique is tailored to the person in front of you.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, understanding how your skin behaves is essential before any cosmetic tattooing procedure. Skin changes with age, and that should always inform the technique.

How To Make Your Results Last Longer

This is something I am passionate about because I want your investment to go the distance. Here is what actually makes a difference:

During Healing:

  • Clean the area every hour for the first four hours on day one using your aftercare pad
  • Wash gently with warm water and a gentle cleanser morning and night
  • Apply a rice-sized dab of aftercare cream after each wash
  • Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive on the area
  • Do not pick or scratch, even when it flakes
  • Avoid hot tubs, steam rooms, pools, lakes, and rivers during the healing process
  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds for two weeks
  • Avoid sweaty exercise for two weeks
  • Avoid brow makeup, brow tints, lash tints, and other facial treatments for 10 days

Long Term:

  • Wear daily sunscreen to prevent the sun from prematurely fading the pigment
  • Avoid any product that lightens, brightens, or tightens near your brows indefinitely
  • Get a yearly touch-up to maintain the full color and shape
  • After applying makeup or foundation, use a damp Q-tip to clean off your brows so the pigment shows through without looking muddled

Frequently Asked Questions

The full healing process takes eight weeks, with your perfecting session happening around week six. I know people expect it to be faster, but the pigment needs that full time to settle and show its true color. Please do not judge your results until day 56.

This is the question I get more than almost any other. Around days eight to ten, the brows can look extremely light or almost gone. The pigment is still there, just settling under the skin. It comes back. Give it the full eight weeks.

Yes. The pigment goes into the skin and stays there. What changes over time is the vibrancy. Most people notice their brows losing warmth and starting to fade around the one to two year mark, which is why regular touchups are so important. A touchup refreshes the color and keeps everything looking sharp and intentional.

Absolutely, and I genuinely love working with mature skin. The technique needs to be adapted, but the results can be beautiful. Softer pigment, a lighter hand, and thoughtful placement make all the difference.

Sun exposure, products that lighten or brighten near the brows, oily skin, skipping touchups, and not following aftercare instructions. Protecting the area from the sun and being mindful of your skincare are the two biggest things you can control.

Yes, and it is built into the process for a reason. The perfecting session is where we refine the shape, fill in any uneven spots, and make sure you are completely happy with the result. Plan for it from the start. After that, most clients come back every one to two years to keep their color fresh and their shape crisp.
